My favorite trip every year is the Denali Highway trip or trips as we go twice a year, once in the summer and once in the fall.
The summer trip tends to have more moderate weather and the whole valley is lush and green, flowers are blooming birds are chirping, animals are fat and sassy all is calm. You really don’t know green until you’ve spent a weekend in Denali examining the varying shades, and appreciating the solitude. Fall is completely different. Everyone is there to hunt, the animals are restless it’s very crowded, but we go for the Denali Road Lottery (when we win) weekend.
For one day we get to drive our personal vehicle thru the park all the way to Kantishna. In the National park there is no hunting just viewing. It seems the animals know this and don’t mind all the attention while they go about their business giving us endless photo opts. We have the best most relaxing time that day. With a limit on the number of vehicles there are significantly less people than a regular day when the bus is running. All too soon the sun is setting and we have to leave the park. We hope hunting has been good for someone down the Denali Highway so we have a shot at finding a camping spot. The next morning we’re up and ready for an ATV adventure. Fall is beautiful with a breathtaking multitude of colors the air is crisp the sun is warm (if its not snowing or sleeting or raining) and we enjoy another magnificent day in Alaska.
